Application Procedures


Deadlines: The deadline for the USF Geology Graduate Application is February 15 for the next Fall Term.

Information for All Applicants

All applicants must take the Graduate Record Examination (GRE) and have your scores submitted to USF. Admittance to the MS program generally requires a combined verbal & quantitative score of at least 295. Admittance to the PhD program generally requires a combined score of at least 300. Neither of the scores should be less than the 30th percentile.

Complete your application with the following forms:

  1. Your Personal Information form
  2. Your Areas of Interest form
  3. Your CV or resume (recommended)
  4. A Personal Statement that addresses the question "Why have you chosen USF as the place to continue your academic development, and what are your research goals?"
  5. Three letters of recommendation.

   Information for International Applicants

International applicants whose native language is not English or who have not earned a university degree in the United States must demonstrate proficiency in English by submitting acceptable scores on one of the English proficiency tests listed below. Test results must have been earned within two (2) years of the desired term of entry.

Please Note: These requirements are for admission to a program of graduate studies at USF. Students who want to be considered for a teaching assistantship must show proficiency in spoken English with a minimum score of 26 on the spoken portion of the Internet-based TOEFL (iBT) or 160 on the spoken portion of the Test of English for International Communication (TOEIC) test. Please see USF's International Language requirements for more information.

The English proficiency test requirement may be waived if the applicant meets one of the following conditions:

  • The applicant's native language is English, or
  • Has scored the equivalent of 153 (equivalent to 500, old scoring method) or higher on the GRE Verbal Reasoning section or
  • Has earned a college bachelor's or graduate degree at a regionally accredited U.S. institution of higher learning or
  • Has earned a college bachelor's or graduate degree from an institution whose language of instruction is English (this must be noted on the transcript or on an official Certificate of Medium of Instruction from the institution)
